How to use this

  • What it builds

This word search steps up from the three-letter version: a larger 8x8 grid, eight four-letter words, and a third direction, the slant from top-left to bottom-right. Looking for a word that might run across, down or diagonally asks a child to scan more flexibly and to check a whole spelling rather than just a first letter, which reinforces letter order and the look of common words such as FISH, MOON and CAKE. Words never run backwards, so every one reads in the normal direction once found.

  • Ready when

A child who can read four-letter words and has done the easy word search comfortably is ready.

  • How to run it

Print one copy. Let the child choose which word to hunt first and circle each as they find it. If they are stuck, suggest looking for the least common letter in the word, such as the K in DUCK or the F in FROG, then checking the letters around it. Ten minutes is plenty. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
