How to use this

  • What it builds

Fifty dots takes a child past the counting range they use every day and into the numbers where the order has to be read, not guessed: 39 comes after 38, then 40, and the tens change on the way. The heart is a smooth curve, so a wrong turn shows at once as a bump, which gives the child their own feedback without an adult pointing it out. It is the step after the 1 to 30 starburst, with a shape every child recognises and a reason to keep going to the end.

  • Ready when

A child who finished the dot to dot 1 to 30 sheet, can count to 50 aloud and is happy to work for ten minutes, usually around six or seven. Children still working up to 20 should start with the 1 to 10 or 1 to 20 sheets.

  • How to run it

Print one copy. Count aloud together from 1 to 50 once, tracking the labels with a finger. Then let the child work alone, placing the pencil on each dot before saying its number. If a line goes to the wrong dot, keep going, then talk about where it changed. Ten minutes is typical. Colour the heart afterwards. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
