How to use this

  • What it builds

The hard sheet packs eleven shapes into a five-by-three grid and hides eight changes, two of each kind: two colours that have shifted, two shapes that have gone, two that are new, and two that are bigger or smaller. With that many changes a child cannot rely on one obvious gap. They have to compare the pictures systematically, row by row, which is the same careful checking that later helps with proofreading and with spotting a wrong digit in a sum. Missing shapes are the hardest to notice, because there is nothing on the page to look at, so this sheet rewards a child who checks every cell, not only the shapes.

  • Ready when

A child who has finished the medium spot-the-difference sheet and found all six differences, usually around seven or eight, is ready. The easy and medium sheets in this set are the steps before it.

  • How to run it

Print one copy. Work across one row at a time: name the shape in Picture A, then check the same place in Picture B. Circle each difference as it is found, and count the circles at the end. Eight is the target. If a child finds six or seven, ask them to look at the empty spaces and at the sizes, which are the two kinds people miss most. Ten to fifteen minutes is typical. The free answers pack in this set has the key for this sheet. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
