How to use this

• What it builds

  The medium maze roughly doubles the grid of the easy version, and the jump is deliberate: a 10x12 grid is too big to take in with a single glance, so a child has to actually track their position as they go, rather than eyeballing the whole solution before starting. That shift — from 'see the answer' to 'find the answer step by step' — is closer to how mazes work at every size an adult encounters them, and it's also a decent proxy for the kind of sustained visual tracking children later need for reading a line of text without losing their place. More dead ends and longer branches mean more backtracking, which is exactly the point: a child who never has to reconsider a choice on this page hasn't been challenged by it.

• Ready when

  Best for a child who already finishes the easy 6x6 maze quickly and confidently. If the easy maze still takes real effort or several tries, that one is worth repeating (or trying a fresh copy) before stepping up to this size.

• How to run it

  Print one copy. Let them work independently this time rather than pointing things out — the bigger grid is meant to be worked through with some real trial and error. Five to ten minutes covers the page depending on how many dead ends they explore. A highlighter or different-colour pencil for false starts (without erasing) can turn one maze into a conversation afterward about which paths didn't work and why. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. Works well as an independent quiet-time or waiting-room activity once a child is past the easy-maze stage.
