How to use this
What it builds
A first word search turns letter recognition into a hunt. To find CAT the child has to hold the word in mind, name its first letter, and scan the grid for that letter and then check the letters beside or below it, which practises left-to-right and top-to-bottom tracking along with matching the sounds they are learning to the shapes on the page. Six three-letter words keep the list short enough to finish, and every word is a simple consonant-vowel-consonant word a beginning reader can already sound out. Words only run across and down, never backwards or diagonally, so the task stays a search and not a puzzle about direction.
Ready when
A child who knows most letter names and can sound out simple three-letter words is ready.
How to run it
Print one copy. Read the first word aloud together and say its first letter, then let the child look for it. A finger or a coloured pencil to circle each word works well. If they get stuck, ask which letter the word starts with and point to the row to look in. Five to ten minutes covers the whole page. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
