• ① What it builds

  At 18x18 this maze is more than twice the grid of the medium size, and the difficulty comes from more than raw size: real single-solution mazes at this scale carry long, similar-looking corridors and dead ends nested inside dead ends, so a solver has to hold several open branches in mind at once rather than following one obvious path. That's a genuinely different skill than the earlier sizes — sustained visual tracking and systematic backtracking, the same planning-under-uncertainty skill chess puzzles and logic grids build, applied here with nothing but a pencil and a path to trace. Older kids who've outgrown the easy and medium mazes in this library often ask for exactly this: 'harder,' not 'different' — this page is that same format, scaled up rather than reinvented.

• ② Ready when

  Best for a child around 8-12 who already finishes the medium 10x12 maze quickly and wants a real challenge — this is not a starting point. If the medium maze still takes real effort, that one is worth more practice first.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy and let them work through it independently — this size is meant to take real time and real trial and error, unlike the easy/medium sizes built for guided use. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes is normal depending on how many dead ends get explored. A highlighter for false starts (without erasing) turns one maze into a record of the actual strategy used, which is worth talking through afterward. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. Works well as a quiet independent activity, a car-trip page, or a warm-up before harder logic puzzles like sudoku or logic grids.
