  Connect-the-dots asks a child to do two things most counting worksheets keep separate: recognize numerals in the correct sequence and use that sequence to guide a hand movement, one dot to the next, in order. Missing a number or drawing to the wrong dot next breaks the shape, which gives a child immediate, visible feedback that a plain counting page doesn't — they can see the mistake in the drawing itself, not just hear 'that's wrong.' Numbers 1 through 10 keep this within the range most preschoolers can already recognize by sight, so the actual new skill is the sequencing and the drawing, not the numerals themselves. Ten dots forming a five-point star is enough shape for a satisfying reveal without asking for more hand control than a first attempt at this format should need.

• ② Ready when

  A child who can recognize numerals 1 through 10 in order (even if they can't write them yet) and hold a crayon or pencil is ready. This is usually one of the first 'puzzle' formats a preschooler tries, often right alongside basic counting pages.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Have them find and touch each numeral in order first, without drawing, so the sequence is clear before the pencil comes out — then go back and connect dot to dot, saying each number out loud as they draw to it. Three to five minutes covers the page. If a line goes to the wrong dot, don't erase immediately; ask 'what number comes after this one?' and let them find the fix themselves.
