How to use this

• ① What it builds

  This is the same 4x4 sudoku rule as the easy sheet, with only six of the sixteen cells filled in instead of nine — enough of a drop that a child usually can't solve a row by elimination alone and has to cross-check rows, columns, and boxes together to find the one cell where all three rules agree on a single answer. That's the real difference between 'harder' sudoku and 'easier' sudoku at any size: not bigger numbers, but fewer clues forcing more of the grid to be worked out logically rather than read off directly. Two puzzles on the page still keeps it inside a reasonable attention span for a child who has already built confidence on the easy sheet.

• ② Ready when

  Best for a child who already finishes the easy mini sudoku sheet without help. Jumping straight here without that step usually means more guessing than logical checking, which defeats the point of the puzzle.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Let them attempt the first puzzle mostly independently, stepping in only if they're stuck for a while — ask 'what numbers are already used in that row? that column? that box?' rather than naming the missing number. Ten to fifteen minutes can cover both puzzles at this difficulty. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. If a puzzle is finished quickly and correctly, that's the signal a bigger 9x9 sudoku (a common next step around age 7-8) is worth trying next.
