How to use this

• ① What it builds

  A maze is one of the earliest planning tasks a child does on paper: before they can trace a path with a pencil from start to finish, they have to hold the goal in mind and look ahead past a dead end rather than just following the nearest opening. A 6x6 grid is small enough that a young child can see the whole maze at once without losing their place, which matters because working memory, not the fine-motor skill of drawing a line, is usually the real limit at this age. The path is generated so there is exactly one route from the top-left start to the bottom-right finish, with a handful of short dead ends branching off it — enough to make the child actually look before committing to a direction, not so many that the page becomes frustrating. Drawing the solution line itself is good pencil-control practice too, since it has to stay inside a fairly narrow corridor the whole way, unlike free drawing where any line will do.

• ② Ready when

  Any preschooler who can hold a crayon or pencil and trace a simple line is ready — no counting, letters, or reading is needed, just looking ahead and choosing a path. This is usually the very first maze a child tries, before moving on to a bigger grid.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Point to the arrow at the top-left and the arrow at the bottom-right before they start, so the goal is clear, then let them trace the path with a finger first and a pencil second — fingers make it easy to back out of a wrong turn without a mark on the page. Two to five minutes covers the page. If they get stuck at a dead end, ask 'what happens if we go back to the last corner and try a different way?' rather than pointing out the correct turn — backtracking on their own is the actual skill this page builds. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. Once this size feels easy in under two minutes, the medium maze in the same set is the natural next step.
