How to use this

  • What it builds

Spotting a rule that repeats and carrying it forward. Pattern skill at 4 to 5 years is linked to later maths. The game starts with two pictures that take turns (AB), then adds repeats inside the rule (AAB, ABB), a third picture (ABC) and finally a missing piece in the middle of a row.

  • Ready when

A child who can name and match everyday pictures is ready. Reading is not needed: every picture is spoken aloud, and the first screen shows the repeating group.

  • How to run it

A grown-up sets the child's age once; the game starts at a suitable level and moves up as the child succeeds. Sit alongside for the first few rounds and say the pattern together: star, heart, star, heart. Afterwards ask how they knew what came next. Short sessions of five to ten minutes work best.
