ABC Pattern Quick Sheet

What it builds. ABC moves from two elements to three — cow, sheep, hen, cow, sheep, hen — which is a genuinely harder working-memory task than any two-element pattern, since a child has to hold three distinct positions in mind rather than two before the repeat lands. It's the last and hardest pattern type in this library's set, meant to come after AB, AAB, and ABB feel comfortable rather than as a starting point. Three-element patterns are also closer to what a kindergarten or Year 1 classroom means by 'pattern' once the concept moves beyond the introductory stage, so this page bridges toward that slightly more advanced expectation without jumping straight to four or five elements. As with the simpler pattern pages, every row uses a different trio of icons rather than repeating the same three throughout, so a correct answer has to come from reading the three-step structure itself.

Before you start. Comfortable with AB, AAB, and ABB patterns already. ABC is the hardest of the four pattern types in this library and suits a child finishing up two-element patterns, not one just starting out on pattern recognition. Most children are ready for three-element patterns toward the end of preschool or the start of kindergarten, once two-element patterns feel automatic.

How to run it. Print one copy. Say each row out loud slowly, pointing to each icon in turn — 'cow, sheep, hen, cow, sheep, hen...' — before they circle what comes next; three-element patterns benefit from this out-loud step more than two-element ones do, since there's simply more to hold in mind.
