How to use this

• What it builds

  AAB adds a repetition inside the unit — apple, apple, leaf, apple, apple, leaf — which asks a child to track three positions instead of two before the pattern repeats, a real step up in working memory from a plain AB alternation. It's also the pattern type most likely to get confused with its mirror image, ABB, since both use only two elements; a child who has AAB solid but mixes it up with ABB isn't confused about patterns in general, just about this one specific pairing, and the two are deliberately offered as separate quick sheets in this library so that confusion can be practiced and resolved directly rather than blended into one page. Icons change on every row for the same reason the AB page does — a repeated pair would let a child guess from memory instead of reading the actual structure of the pattern, which is the entire point of practicing it.

  Comfortable with AB patterns already — AAB is meant to feel like a step up, not a first pattern page. If plain alternation still takes real effort, the AB quick sheet is the better starting point before this one. • How to run it

  Print one copy. Say each row's pattern out loud together, stressing the repeated element — 'apple, APPLE, leaf' — before they circle the next item. Two to four minutes covers the page. If AAB and ABB (the next quick sheet in this library) get mixed up, that's a normal and expected confusion at this stage; working through both on the same day, back to back, usually settles the distinction faster than doing them weeks apart.
