How to use this

  • What it builds

Self-control and attention: holding back the quick answer (reading the word) to give the right one (the colour of the ink). It is a classic brain-training task, and it gets harder one step at a time.

  • Ready when

A child who knows a few colour names such as red, blue and yellow. Level 1 needs no reading. Later levels use colour words, so a child who is just starting to read will enjoy it with a grown-up beside them.

  • How to run it

A grown-up sets the child's age once; the game starts at a suitable level. Ask the child to slow down and say what colour their eyes see. Praise the pause, not the speed. Afterwards ask which was trickier, the ink or the word.
