  This page turns the plain dab-a-dot motion into a counting rehearsal by tying the number of targets in each row directly to that row's number, one dot on the first row, all the way up to ten dots on the last. Dabbing each target while counting out loud gives a child a physical action to pair with each number word, which is a more concrete anchor for early counting than saying numbers in the air or pointing at pictures — every dab is a discrete, felt event, not just a glance. The row-by-row climb from 1 to 10 also means a child re-encounters the whole counting sequence in order every single time they do the page, which is exactly the kind of repetition that makes counting to ten automatic rather than effortful.

• ② Ready when

  Any toddler who can hold a dauber, marker, or crayon and is starting to hear number words in order is ready — they don't need to recognize written numerals yet, since counting out loud while dabbing is the whole point, not reading a number off the page.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Work down the rows together, counting each dab out loud as they place it — 'one, two, three' — rather than letting them dab silently and count at the end. Five to eight minutes covers all ten rows. If they lose count partway through a row, that's a normal and useful moment: go back to the first dot in that row and recount together rather than just supplying the missing number.
