How to use this

  • What it builds

The teen numbers are where many children stall, because their names do not follow the pattern of the numbers after twenty. Each row here is a full line of ten pictures with the extras on a second line, so a child sees every teen number as ten and some more, which is the idea that place value later builds on. Kindergarten maths standards ask for exactly this: composing numbers from 11 to 19 as ten ones and some further ones. The child then writes the number, joining the count to the numeral.

  • Ready when

A child who can count to 20, finished the count and write 1 to 10 sheet, and can write single digits, usually five or six. Teen numbers can be hard to hear, so say them slowly.

  • How to run it

Print one copy. For each row, count the first line together and agree it is ten, then count on from ten for the extras: ten, eleven, twelve. Let the child write the number in the box. Do two or three rows a day if the whole page is too much. Say each as 'ten and three more' alongside 'thirteen'. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
