How to use this

• ① What it builds

  A word family page keeps the ending sound (the 'rime') fixed across every row so a child can focus on the one part of the word that actually changes — the starting consonant — instead of sounding out three letters from scratch every time. Every word on this page ends in 'at,' and every one of the three letter choices offered per row is itself a real starting sound for some word in the family, so a child has to actually think about which sound belongs to the specific word being read aloud, not just recognize 'a real word exists here.' That structure is exactly how phonics programs introduce blending: once 'at' is secure, swapping the first letter — c, h, m, s, b, r — produces six real words almost for free, which is a much faster route to reading confidence than sounding out six unrelated CVC words with nothing in common.

• ② Ready when

  A child who already knows individual letter sounds (at least the consonants used here: c, h, m, s, b, r) and can blend two sounds together (like 'a' + 't') is ready. This usually comes right after a child is comfortable with simple CVC blending in general, often alongside the primer sight-words sheet in this library.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Say the target word out loud for the first row ('cat') and ask them to find the letter that makes that sound at the start, before circling it and writing the full word. Five to ten minutes covers the page. If they circle the wrong letter, sound out the word slowly together rather than pointing at the answer — hearing the mismatch themselves is what fixes it. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
