How to use this

• What it builds

  Gratitude is a feeling children have long before they have the words for it, and this page gives them a way to show it. Four boxes ask for a person, a food, a place and something fun. The child draws first, which is easier than writing, and then says why it matters, which builds vocabulary and the habit of giving a reason. Each box has a line starting 'I am thankful for', so a child who is ready can write a word or a grown-up can write it for them. The same page works as a Thanksgiving table decoration or a card to share.

• Ready when

  Any child who can hold a crayon and talk about their day, usually from about four. Writing is not needed: a grown-up can write what the child says.

• How to run it

  Print one copy. Read the label on the first box and let the child choose what to draw. When they have finished, ask: who, what, or where is it, and why are you thankful? Write their answer on the line in their words. Do one box a day over four days, or all four at the table before dinner. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
