How to use this

• ① What it builds

  Subtraction within 5 is almost always taught right alongside addition within 5, and this page keeps the same visual language on purpose — a row of dots a child can subitize at a glance, not a number too big to see without counting one by one.   A child who can count a group of up to five objects and already has some comfort with the addition-within-5 page is ready for this one; the two are usually taught back to back so the dot visual stays familiar while the direction of the story changes from joining to taking away.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Work the first row together: count the full group out loud, then count the crossed-out dots separately before counting what's left uncrossed to fill the box. That three-step narration — start amount, taken-away amount, what's left — is the actual lesson, more than the written total. Five to ten minutes covers the page. If a total comes out wrong, don't erase first; recount the uncrossed dots together, since the recount is what fixes the habit. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
