  A child who already subtracts confidently within 20 and understands place value to 100 (that 42 is 4 tens and 2 ones) is ready. This is typically a first- or second-grade skill, usually taught right after 2-digit subtraction *without* regrouping, once that simpler case feels automatic.

  Work through the first problem together on a whiteboard or scratch paper before they start the page: circle the ones column, ask 'can we take 7 away from 2?', then show how borrowing one ten from the tens column turns 2 into 12.
