How to use this
What it builds
Once a child is solid with subtraction within 5, within 10 is the natural next step, and the jump matters more than it looks: groups of six to ten dots are usually too many to subitize, so a child has to actually count the full row before the taken-away part even starts, then recount what's uncrossed at the end — two counts on one row instead of one. That's the same shift addition-within-10 makes, and keeping the crossed-out visual identical to the within-5 page means the only thing that got harder is the counting range, not the concept. The eight pairs deliberately mix small take-aways from a big group (9 take 4) with take-aways that remove more than half (6 take 3), so a child practices both ends of the range rather than only the easy 'take away one or two' pattern that some worksheets lean on.
Ready when
A child who already works through subtraction-within-5 confidently and can count a group of up to ten objects one at a time is ready for this page. This is usually a kindergarten or early Year 1 step, right alongside — not necessarily after — addition within 10.
How to run it
Print one copy. Do the first two rows together, counting the full group out loud before counting the crossed-out dots, then let them finish the rest alone. Five to ten minutes covers the page. If a row is slow, that's expected at this range — resist the urge to help count faster; the point of within-10 is building the stamina to count a bigger group accurately, not to rush it. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. Parents who found this after the within-5 page stops being a challenge are exactly the intended next step; keep both in the same folder for whichever level fits a sibling or the next class.
