How to use this

• ① What it builds

  Sight words are the handful of words — 'a', 'and', 'the', 'is' — that show up so often in beginning reading that sounding them out letter by letter would slow a new reader down on almost every sentence. The Dolch pre-primer list is the standard starting set most kindergarten reading programs use, and several of these words (like 'a' and 'and') don't sound the way their letters would suggest if sounded out, which is exactly why they get memorized as whole shapes rather than decoded. This page uses the same trace-then-write progression as every tracing product in this library — a dashed guide copy first, then two blank lines to write the word from memory — applied to whole words instead of single letters, since recognizing and reproducing the whole shape is the actual skill being built here, not letter formation.

• ② Ready when

  A child who can already trace and write most individual letters is ready — this page doesn't require reading ability yet, just letter-formation control applied to a slightly longer string of letters than a single-letter tracing page asks for.

• ③ How to run it

  Print one copy. Read each word aloud before they trace it, since the point is connecting the shape to the sound and meaning, not just copying marks. Have them say the word out loud again after each of the two write-it-yourself lines. Five to ten minutes covers the page. If a written attempt is hard to read back, that's useful information — go slower on that word next time rather than moving on. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download.
