How to use this

  • What it builds

Large, simple outlines give young children a finished picture they can complete on their own, which builds the grip, pressure control and staying-inside-the-lines habits that handwriting needs later. Halloween is a good moment for it: children already know pumpkins and ghosts, so they choose colours with a reason ('ghosts are white, but I want a rainbow one'), and the talk while they colour is vocabulary practice.

  • Ready when

Any child who can hold a chunky crayon or marker is ready. Four- and five-year-olds will mostly stay inside the lines; younger children can scribble-fill the big shapes, which is exactly the right level of challenge for them. Every picture is cute and friendly, with nothing scary.

  • How to run it

Print the pack once and let your child pick which page to start with. Crayons and markers both work; washable markers give the boldest colour on the big shapes. Ask what colour the pumpkin's glow is, or whether the ghost is a happy one, then let them work. Each page takes about ten minutes. A4 and US Letter both print from the same download.
