How to use this

  • What it builds

Within 10 is the step up from subitizing to careful one-by-one counting, because most of these eight totals use at least one group of six or more that a child cannot glance at and just know — they have to touch and count. That shift is deliberate: once counting small groups is automatic, the next skill is holding a running total in mind while counting a second group onto it, which is what 'how many altogether' actually asks for. The eight pairs mix easy doubles (4+4) with harder crossings of five (7+2, 6+3) so a child practices both recognizing a familiar shape and doing the slower count for an unfamiliar one on the same page. Writing the sum in a box after counting aloud rehearses the exact routine — count, count, combine, write — that carries straight into first-grade worksheets with numerals instead of dots. It's also the page where a child usually first notices that order doesn't matter — that 4+2 and 2+4 both land on six — since several pairs on this sheet use the same two numbers in a different order, and pointing that out the first time it comes up saves re-teaching commutativity as a separate lesson later.

  • Ready when

A child who can reliably count a group of up to ten objects without skipping or recounting is ready. They should already find within-5 addition easy — if they are still unsure on totals of four or five, that page is the better starting point. An adult reading the instructions aloud is still fine; the child does not need to read to do this page. Expect the first two or three rows to go quickly and the later ones with bigger totals to slow down — that's the page working as intended, not a sign of trouble.

  • How to run it

Print one copy on plain paper. Point to the left cluster and count aloud together, then the right cluster, then ask 'how many altogether?' before they write the total in the box. Five to eight minutes covers the page since several rows need real counting rather than a glance. For a class set, print one per child — free for classroom use, no licence needed. If a total comes out wrong, recount both groups together rather than erasing first; the recount is the actual lesson. Both UK (A4) and US (Letter) paper sizes print from the same download. Parents searching for free printable addition worksheets for kindergarten usually land here after the within-5 page stops being a challenge; keep both in the same folder so a sibling or the next class can start at whichever level fits.
