Same or Different Matching Quick Sheet
One free page: look at each farm pair and circle same or different.
How to use this
What it builds. Matching trains visual discrimination — noticing what is the same and what is different — which underpins letter recognition, sorting, and early reading. Same-or-different pages make the judgment explicit. Shadow matching asks a child to hold a shape in mind and find its silhouette, a classic preschool fine-motor and observation task. Count-and-match pages bridge counting to symbol recognition so the numeral is not floating free of meaning. Farm icons keep the theme warm and reusable across our counting line without needing new art for every sheet. Visual matching also supports early science sorting (living/non-living later) and the left-to-right tracking used in reading. Keeping icons large and uncluttered matters more than packing the page: a three-year-old needs clear silhouettes, not tiny stickers. Our farm set is the same art used on count-and-circle pages, so a child who already met the cow on a counting sheet recognizes it here. That reuse is deliberate — familiarity lowers the language load so the matching judgment stays the focus.
Before you start. Toddlers who can point to pictures and older preschoolers who enjoy puzzles both benefit. Shadow match is easiest when the child already knows the animal names; say them together once before starting if they are new.
How to run it. Print one page. For same-or-different, have them circle with a crayon. For shadow and count-match, a pencil line is enough. Talk through one row as a model, then let them finish. Teachers: use as a morning-tub or quiet-table task; laminate and use dry-erase for reuse. Matching worksheets show up constantly in preschool planning because they look like play and still train attention. A free printable shadow matching page is a classic centre activity; same-or-different pages double as conversation starters for language. Farm animals keep the theme familiar for ages three to five. Print on ordinary paper; laminate only if you want dry-erase reuse in a classroom. Adults should model the first row, then step back. There is no score — the win is careful looking. Pair with our counting pages that use the same farm icons so the set feels like one collection. Instant download, A4 and Letter, free for home and classroom use with no licence fee.
